Tight-rope walker
The circus has come to color this town
Bright balloons rise into the air
The last show begins, the money's run out
It's the end for the travelling fair
The rich arrive late with their elegant dates
On parade as they jangle their jewels
On the opposite side, the kids hold their breath
They were laughing, excited as fools
And walking tall above them all
A ray of sun in his eyes...
Tight-rope walker suspended
Between the young and old
Between the dirt and gold
Between the two acts, here's the sly ballerina
Who glides towards the scent of cologne
The clown who for years brought a smile to the kids
Thinks it's time he found one of his own
The animals all will be freed from the cages
And left on their own to survive
The tables will turn as the trainer gets whipped
By a lady who's just caught his eye
And walking tall above them all
With streaming rain in his eyes...
Tight-rope walker suspended
Between the wrong and right
Between the shade and light
And when the last applause has died the lights go down
And everything appears to be one color now
Our walker continues his balancing act
And he holds himself up with his mind
A little boy hides in the dark fields tonight
And he's watching the man cross the sky
He wishes him the best of luck,
Says, "One day I'll catch up to you"...
Tight-rope walker suspended
Between the now and then
Between the where and when
back
Wavelength
Brothers by blood
Who looked so much the same
Raised in two worlds,
An' in such different ways
Arrived on a street,
From different directions, on opposite sides
And exchanging a glance,
Saw differing pictures with similar eyes
And neither one heard
The other one's music but only his own
It might've been magic, the light might've shone
But they never met on the same . . . wavelength
Waving two flags,
And wailing clashing themes
And neither can see
Why the other sees differently
How lovely it would be
A moment of silence to find harmony
Just think of the traffic that there'd have to be
If everyone rode on the same . . . wavelength
I . . . will never find you
The one on the stairs I've been waiting for
Know that my heart can't hold out much more
What's goin' on?
A trembling's begun far away
It's walking the line
And from the horizon, someone's on her way
And maybe this time,
I'll hear her music and she will hear mine
We might become magic, from shadow to shine
If we can just meet on the same . . . wavelength
back
The night alone
No-one knew her face
She went everyplace
In the silent company
Of her timeless enemy
And the night was theirs alone
Springtime filled with stars
And it filled her heart
With a man who came to stay
Scared the enemy away
And the night was theirs alone
Not a word was said
Slipping down to bed
On the sand and wind and waves
And their breath was all the same
And the night was theirs alone
But you know the grass is always greener
And he went away to find something he needed
There was nothing left for her to do
But watch him through her tears and know for sure that
Now her dream was leaving
Time came when doubts
Slipped into their heads
Time came when enemies
Slipped into their beds
And the water flowed away ...
Under the bridge
When the year had flown
And he came back home
He was taken by the hand
Led among those dunes of sand
And once again
The night was theirs alone
back
Pilgrim without a name
You know the story that we read
Under the blankets of my bed
At every thunder we shuddered and held onto each other
And the rain was drummin' drummin' drummin'
On a wet cat that climbed fast
Searching for a way
Just another place
Oh my Bobby Jean
I'm a pilgrim without a name . . .
A lonely rider fallen from a state of grace
When he landed he looked for what he lacked
Sitting backwards upon his donkey's back
And the sandy line he traced was the hero's track
And his mind was flyin' flyin' flyin'
Like a blind bird in the sunshine
Searching in the shade
Just another face
Oh my Bobby Jean
I'm a pilgrim without a name . . .
He says, "So I enjoy the countryside that's gone
And get surprised by the new things to come"
And so the moon is rising to the bait
Our man is sinking from the weight
And the dark side of the bright fish drags him down
Broken hearts are movin' movin' movin'
Like a lost ship from port to port
Just another dream
Is the reason to believe
back
Work in progress
Running along,
Too fast down a road
That I'd never seen
The fields were of gold
And I'd seen them in my dreams
An' if you don't hold
With a tight hand on the reins
That pull you along,
You're likely to roll
Back to the place from which you came
No-one would have known that I'd been Mr. Prudent,
Posting all those warning signs, "Don't get deluded"
I'd written this message: work in progress
Flyin' so high,
As the ground speeds by below
From up in the air
You're likely to find
That there's beauty everywhere
Not easy to glide
At a pace that lets you see
What you'd rather hide
You don't take the time,
You ignore reality
This is how I fell to earth without a warning
'N' falling hurts you more the higher you were soaring
I found your heart closed for work in progress
I'll keep on digging always further down
To find that cursed treasure in the ground
To grow back these burned wings
And fly me where all things
Are open to me
And nothing is closed for work in progress
When you dig a hole,
You could dig and never find
What lies at the core
But here in my soul,
I have found what lies in store
I've already lost
And already I have won
The battles ahead
Seen heaven and hell
And I've come back home again
The only thing to keep me back from where I'm goin'
Is me, I am the ally and I'm the opponent,
My head's undergoin' work in progress
back
From the stables to the stars (and back)
The sky and everything else
Have no more meaning
I'm staring at nothin'
Nothin' is staring at me
The few words I'm able to say
Are rambling in my body
I'm hobbling through my days
On these hard steps that are life
My soul seems to sit
On an electric chair
Blood hardly flows in my veins
Maybe it's better to stop it
Something's pushing me onto that train
The ticket says, "From the stables to the stars and back"
The fear of living dead
Bit me on my ass
The dark tunnel has an end
Like a magic spell
Slowly I find the light
She is sitting next to a man
Wasting away in his spite
I'm facing your beauty and soul
My feelings aren't too original
An iceberg could love you
So many things remain
For us to hear and say
Somebody is telling me to get off
The ticket said, "From the stables to the stars and back"
The train is fading away
Another appears from the sky
Death is not the last hope
Hope is the last to die
I'll get on that damned train
'Cause the ticket says, " From the stars to the stables and back"
The worst thing, believe me,
Is to stand here motionless at the station
So you get on once more
Though the realization of something
Comes to the same thing as its destruction
back
Force of habit
In the morning full of darkness,
I leave home still half asleep
And the garbagemen are sweeping
Up the crap that runs so deep
In the kitchen every workday
Washes down into the sink
And the steel and smoke and smells
Make it impossible to think
Look beyond the mirror,
Don't you turn your back no more
Try to see it clearer,
'Cause they're knocking at your door
Open up and escape the trap of the force of habit
Well by now I know by heart
Your stupid faces and your gripes
And I know out there some radio-listeners
Still believe the hype
In the bar we'll have the usual,
Stupid comments and a beer
And the clock is turning on the wall
And death is getting near
Look beyond the mirror,
Don't you turn your back no more
Try to see it clearer,
'Cause they're knocking at your door
Open up and escape the trap of the force of habit
But today somebody somewhere
In the land of sweat 'n' dread
Is gonna take a pin and pop
The soapy bubble 'round his head
I'm gonna take this hammer,
gonna use it against the wall
Gonna pull a brick, gonna break the line
Gonna peek beyond to see what lies behind
Look beyond the mirror,
Don't you turn your back no more
Try to see it clearer,
'Cause they're knocking at your door
I'm gonna take this hammer,
gonna use it against the wall
Open up and escape the trap of the force of habit
back
Time to choose
Well I was sitting on the threshold stairs
Tryin' to understand why no-one ever seems to care
It makes no sense
To just keep sitting on the fence
They say it makes no sense
Well I was lying in the river bed
Letting the water wash direction into my head
You gotta choose
'Cause if you don't you're gonna lose
They say I've gotta choose
It's not a choice, it's a mission, I'm telling you
A loaded guitar is the gun that I'm gonna use
Give me time to choose
Well I was standing where the street divides
In a pouring rain a ray of sun started to shine
The weather changed
And all my plans were rearranged
And again the weather changed
And if my cap is full of dimes today
And full of rain tomorrow, I will still continue to play
Upon a stone
Or if I'm sitting on a throne
Until this bird has flown
It's not a choice, it's a mission, I'm telling you
A loaded guitar is the gun that I'm gonna use
'Cause now's the time to choose
back
Love has come
Love has come
From the blue
After a thousand years
Look how the roses bloom
So strong we know they won't be faded by the winter gloom
A voice
We know
It sings
Our song
Love's arrived
Never fear
After a thousand tears
Hear how our hearts have come
To finally drum a rhythm woven into only one
A voice
We know
It sings
Our song
Love is here
Ghosts are gone
After a thousand dreams
We'll slide into the blue
And we'll be making love as only we know how to do
A voice
We know
It sings
Our song
back
Chasing the horizon
Like flies who never see
How to fly to liberty
As they thrash
At the glass
And they crash once again
On a black and white terrain
Like a chessboard game
March the men
Let me say if you're a god at all I'll never
Understand a move or two you've made so far
Maybe you're a pawn yourself
In someone else's game
With no end and no beginning
With no queen or king
One more step in the dark
We're chasing the horizon...
It's a race we can't define
With a moving finishline
And we start
Where we end
On the great carousel
But I'll run it anyway
'Cause it's just the price you pay
As a slave
To a master who's a slave to someone higher
All the world's a trick that we conspire to play
I've begun to see the key is just
Part of the fun
Seeing there was no escape route,
I invented one
One more step in the dark
We're chasing the horizon...
